Tihar (also known as Yamapanchak Deepawali) is a five-day spiritual and cultural Hindu festival of lights celebrated by Nepalese as well as by the Indian Gorkhas inhabiting Sikkim state and Territories (particularly the towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong).

Day Five: The final day of Tihar has sisters putting tika on their brothers’ foreheads to secure for them a long and happy life. This tradition is based on the story of a Hindu goddess who did the same to her brother.

In 2025, Tihar falls on October 21st with celebrations lasting 5 days from October 18th to October 23rd. Tihar is celebrated on the night of the new moon in the 8 th month of the Hindu calendar (the month of Kartik), which is considered to be the darkest night of the year.
