The East Prussian offensive[6] was a strategic offensive by the Soviet Red Army against the German Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front (World War II). It lasted from 13 January to 25 April 1945, though some German units did not surrender until 9 May. The Battle of Königsberg was a major part of the offensive, which ended in victory for the Red Army.

East Prussia, former German province bounded, between World Wars I and II, north by the Baltic Sea, east by Lithuania, and south and west by Poland and the free city of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland). After World War II its territory was divided between the Soviet Union and Poland.

In Jan 1945, General I. D. Chernyakhovsky's 3rd Byelorussian Front and Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky's 2nd Byelorussian Front marched into East Prussia, overwhelming the German defenders with 1.5 million men. This was the great offensive that Guderian feared.

East Prussia was used by the NAZIs as a stagieng area for the invasion of Poland which launched World War II (September 1039). The lack of war damage changed dramtically after the tide of battle changed and Soviet armies approached East Prussia. Many Germans in East Prussia were killed in the war.

Rokossovsky's 2nd Belorussian Front begins its offensive from its Narev bridgehead against Elbing in East Prussia. During its drive toward the Oder river, the Red Army captures Kielce in western Poland. Russians forces cross the Warthe and advance 100-miles on a 160-mile front forcing the Germans to evacuate Warsaw, which falls that same day.

After the war, the Potsdam Conference gave the Soviet Union the northern half of East Prussia (now called the Kaliningrad Oblast) and the southern part to Poland (now called the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship).
