The Absaroka vol-canic rocks are traditionally divided into three groups that collectively form the Absaroka Vol-canic Supergroup (Smedes and Prostka 1972). In as-cending stratigraphic order, these are (1) the Wash-burn Group, (2) the Sunlight Group, and (3) the Thorofare Creek Group.

In order better to understand the origin and significance of across‐strike geochemical variations in the Eocene Absaroka volcanic province (AVP), this article compares compositional data for magmatic rocks from two eruptive centers that define type localities for major stratigraphic subdivisions of the Absaroka Volcanic Supergroup.
These Eocene volcanic rocks have been named the Absaroka Volcanic Supergroup. The three groups that comprise the supergroup are the Washburn, Sunlight, and Thorofare Creek Groups (Smedes and Prostka, 1972). The Washburn Group makes up much of the northern AVP and is the oldest part of this series.
