OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to Paris and London on Monday to seek alliances as he deals with U.S. President Donald Trump’s attacks on Canada’s sovereignty and economy. Carney is purposely making his first foreign trip to the capital cities of the two countries that shaped Canada’s early existence.

Toronto's main stock index opened higher on Friday ahead of Mark Carney's appointment as prime minister of Canada, while still being set for a weekly loss amid growth concerns from an ongoing trade war.

Mark Carney is a newcomer to elected politics, with decades of experience in finance. After his landslide victory, he pledged to continue tariffs on the U.S. "until the Americans show us respect."
