Every expectation within the audience is that the Samaritan will also walk on by and Jesus must be introducing some rule of fours. But the enemy is the hero in this story!

As we grow up, certain memories stick with us, even into adulthood. Recently, one such memory came up as I had a conversation with my grandmother about the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The topic listed on all those cards was the same: The Good Samaritan story from the Bible. The story is about a man who is beaten by robbers and left for dead on the side of the road.

Jesus responded with the story of the good Samaritan. In the account, robbers had beaten a man on the highway between Jerusalem and Jericho.

The Samaritan would have been seen by the beaten man as other, foreign, different, strange, wrong. Thus, for me, the point of the story is not simply the need to be a “Good Samaritan.” ...
