Videogame workers throughout North America have launched a new union as part of the Communications Workers of America called "United Videogame Workers—CWA," a "direct-join organization" that enables "artists, writers, designers, QA testers, programmers, freelancers and beyond to build worker power irrespective of studio and current job status."

Game industry unionization efforts that exploded across Sega of America, Bethesda, and others have recently been on pause. A new initiative by the Communications Workers of America could jumpstart things again.

An industry-wide video game workers union launched Wednesday in partnership with Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the American Federation of Musicians (AFM). A direct-join union, United Videogame Workers-CWA Local 9433 was announced during the 2025 Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
